Subject: Hamlet / Deep Throat

RE: Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000).

In the film within the film, The Mousetrap, that Hamlet makes by
splicing together clips from films on video he rents from Blockbuster
Video, there are two clips from the famous porn movie Deep Throat,
directed by Gerald Damiano, 1972. (Deep Throat is not actually available
at Blockbuster, of course). The clips feature Linda Lovelace's
roommate, Ellen (Dolly Sharp), seen in close ups of her face. The
clips, I take it, are supposed to signify the lasciviousness of Gertrude
and, by extension, Claudius (you can't see either of the two men Ellen
is having sex with in the clips so the analogy with Claudius is only
implied) and comment as well on the different kinds of surveillance
apparatuses used throughout Almereyda film (Deep Throat was of course
the code name Woodward and Bernstein gave their informant on the
Watergate break in and coverup.) Hamlet is perhaps himself a version of
Deep Throat, a deep insider leaking news of the murder of his father.

BTW, an episode of the X-Files (I doubt they intended the pun on "X" to
be activated) featured a character named Deep Throat. Go to:
