Hi Jane -

I have a copy of the "Hamlet" you mention - recorded from a 1964
production of Burton in Sir John Gielgud's production staged at the
Lunt-Fontaine Theatre in NYC. The edition I have is a double video set,
including an interesting little book which sets out staging and a
synopsis, and is highlighted by the following by the venerable Sir John
himself:

"This is a HAMLET acted in rehearsal clothes, stripped of all extraneous
trappings, so the beauty of the language and imagery may shine through
unencumbered by an elaborate reconstruction of any particular historical
period. This performance is conceived as a final run-through, as actors
call it.

When a play has been thoroughly prepared, there is always a full final
rehearsal of the text and action played straight through, without
interruption from the director. Properties or substitutes are provided
for the actors, but the costumes, scenery, and lighting are yet to be
added. It often happens, however, that these final adjuncts, however
beautiful, may cramp the players' imagination and detract from the
poetic imagery of Shakespeare's text.

Sir John Gielgud."

It is a very interesting film, and the copy I have was distributed by
BMG Video in 1995, and the video was restored at the National Film and
Television Archive of the British Film Institute. The product code on
the spine is 74321 403603.

I hope this is able to help you locate a copy - although the fact that I
am in Australia may mean that this is an edition that is non-compatible
with anywhere else in the world! Things are funny like that.

Hope I could help.

The Burton Hamlet (which I saw on Broadway ... it changed my life!
Burton, sadly, never lived up to what he could have become, but this
performance, at least, gave the world a brief glimpse of the
possibilities) is available through The Writing Company, Culver City,
CA. Try their web page: http://writingco.com Be warned, it's $90.00!
That's why I don't have a copy (If you can find an affordable one,
please let ME know!).

I expect that the video can't accurately translate the effect of Burton
alive. But it will have to do!
