Not everyone finds the same things funny. Some people thought the Porter
in the Doran/Sher/Walter stage production hilarious; others loathed his
'knock-knock' jokes. But by delivering the lines about the equivocator
in a good impersonation of Tony Blair, the actor ensured that, for the
first time in my experience, most of the British people in the audience
actually understood what an equivocator is. The communication in the
theatre of a difficult meaning that usually sends us scurrying to the
commentary notes is no mean achievement.
