Surely King Lear's division of the kingdom (which so many have sort to
explain in different ways) is merely a forgetful mis-reading or
under-reading of its predecessor King Leir which as Tolstoy rightly
pointed out actually makes sense. It strikes me that the debate about
'state' and 'unstate' may also not be wholly unrelated to this fact.
Shakespeare is not sui generis.
