Dear Mike--

James Bednarz has a book forthcoming (May, I think) on the Poet's War
that sounds like it will contribute to the supercession of Penniman.
It looks to be related to a series of articles he has published on
Marston, Jonson, and the Poetomachia.

There is also a recent book called Wars of the Theatres, by Matthew
Steggle in the English Literary Studies monograph series (U of Victoria,
1998) that deals with the War in detail. Steggle also writes
interestingly about the so-called Second War of the Theatres in the
1630s.

I've been working on this material for a long time and it seems to me
that the War is (finally) getting a much-needed re-examination.

Best,
Ed Gieskes
