Comment: Re: SHK 12.0664 Retellings
Kimberly Ellerthorpe mentioned a novel called _Shylock's Daughter_; this
is a retitled novel by Erica Jong; the original title was
_Serenissima_. If you're interested in more spinoffs of Shakespeare's
life and plays, the SHAKSPER website includes the lists of these that I
have been updating in recent years: click on "reference files" on the
main page, then "Shakespeare spinoffs" for material based on the plays
or "character bibliography" for material that uses Shakespeare as a
character. Not on the latter is a recent novel I am currently reading:
P.F. Chisholm's _A Plague of Angels_, the fourth in a series in which
the central character is Robert Carey; the first three were set in the
English/Scottish borders; this one is set in London, and includes
appearances by Marlowe and Greene as well as Shakespeare.

John Updike wrote a prequel to Hamlet called Gertrude and Claudius (or
maybe it's the other way around.) I haven't read it, but I bought it a
few months ago and plan to read it when I get time.
