While we're on the subject of performing The Alchemist, I was in a
production of it at the Shakespeare Institute last March. I was
surprised at how hilarious I found it, and how the comedy relied as much
upon good old slapstick/situational comedy as it did Jonson's flamboyant
flaunting of vocabulary. It also features the intrigue of every
character trying to cheat everyone else and seeing who wins out over
them all. Of course, even the winners lose a little bit in the end.
