Mike Donner is no stranger to controversy. He's dealt with sex &
politics (Crossing the Line), sex & health issues (Positively Yours) and
sex & religion (Our Trespasses). In A Lesson Learned he deals with sex &
education. It is one of the most refreshing videos that I've seen in a
long time. A great mix of sex, story, believable characters and
situations that puts this film among Donner's best.

English Professor Dino Phillips is teaching "Hamlet" to his class. The
bell rings, and the bored students file out. Only student Rod Barry
remains. He asks whether Hamlet and Horatio were lovers, Phillips
catches the subtlety in the question but chooses to ignore it.

Donner has assembled some good actors. Phillips is particularly good as
the professor, a man torn by his love of teaching and his lifestyle. He
has a natural delivery and a good sense of timing. He is very
charismatic and delivers some pretty rough Shakespeare - no minor feat
for most porn stars. Jackson is a fantastic daddy, rough and tender at
the same time. And Gino pulls off a difficult job of staying memorable
as a non-sexual performer in a sexual film. Donner stays faithful to his
characters, right down to the last line of the film. He's written a
romantic, sexual story that is original, funny and inventive and directs
it with a precision hand.

Bravo, Mr. Donner. We'll see you at awards time.
