I wouldn't expect everyone to agree with my view of the Guthrie MND, but
I did review the production in detail--SQ 36 (1986): 229-36--in case any
one is interested. The review also contains summary comments on Ciulei's
other three productions at the Guthrie (Tmp. 1981, AYL 1982, TN 1984),
also reviewed in detail in SQ.

All the best,
Tom Clayton

Robin Phillips directed MND at the Stratford Festival in 1976 and 1977.
I remember vividly the dumbshow--smoke, noise, a bit of
battle--preceding the 77 production (Barry MacGregor as Theseus and
Maggie Smith as Hippolyta), and think it was there in 76 also.

The Max Reinhardt - William Dieterle 1935 film of MND was originally
intended to begin with the war of the Athenians with the Amazons, as
Russell Jackson's recent article on the screenplay shows. What is more,
since a still showing the battle found its way into a 'novelisation' of
the film, it looks likely that the material was shot and then discarded.
