Subject: Revenger's Tragedy Film
Comment: SHK 12.2259 Revenger's Tragedy Film
Peter M. McCluskey informs us:
> Alex Cox, director of "Repo Man," "Sid & Nancy," and several other
> offbeat films, is in post-production with an adaptation of Middleton's
> "The Revenger's Tragedy." According to Cox's website (alexcox.com),
> "This particular project has been in the works since 1976, when I read
> the original text in the library instead of revising for my exams. The
> editing, special effects work, and music (by Chumbawamba?), will be
> complete by Xmas 2001, and the film will be out next year."
I, for one, am excited to see a film version of this marvelous play. The
dates are curious; in 1976, I believe that _The Revenger's Tragedy_ was
generally still being attributed to Cyril Tourneur. When, exactly, and
why, was the attribution changed? I have to admit that I haven't
followed recent scholarship, but I always thought the Middleton
designation a bit shaky.
Curiously,
Paul E. Doniger
