There is a brilliant and provocative study of many of the names in the
play, not only Othello, by Anne Barton as part of her book The Names of
Comedy (Oxford, 1990).

Some ingenious stuff here.

Why not try the obvious! It's rumoured that Shakespeare acted in Ben
Jonson's comedy, Everyman in His Humour, and it is the case that in the
Quarto version of the play (1600) there is a jealous character called
Thorello. Not a difficult act of metathysis to produce 'Othello',
especially after a good night out in Eastcheap with Ben Jonson!

Cheers,
John Drakakis
