Subject: 12.1924 Monarchy Question
Comment: RE: SHK 12.1924 Monarchy Question
Skip Nicholson asked,
On an more unscholarly note, does anyone remember the rest of the
schoolboy rhyme whose first stanza runs:
"William, William, Henry, Stephen,
Henry, Richard, John,
Henry, Edward - One - Two - Three
Richard Two the King will be
When all the Neds are gone..."
The rhyme, as I learned it (doubtless, there are variants), was:
Willy, Willy, Harry, Stee,
Harry, Dick, John, Harry Three;
One, two, three Neds, Richard Two,
Henry Four, Five, Six--then who?
Edward Four, Five--Dick the Bad,
Harries twain, and Ned the lad;
Mary, Bessie, James the Vain,
Charley, Charley, James again;
William and Mary, Anna Gloria,
Four Georges, William and Victoria.
