Subject: Put out the light entertainment.

Details of the latest cinema version of Othello, to be shown in the USA
this weekend, appeared on British TV this morning. The clips shown
indicate an interesting view. During the interview integral to the
trailer one of the cast said, "...we've removed the aspects of the
language [of the text] and the seventeenth century trappings of the play
that cause difficulty ...". One of the production staff emphasised that
the play remained "...true to the original... ". Old hat as the apparent
contradiction of these two statements are, it would be nice to have a
report asap on the film from anyone in America who sees it this weekend.
In particular, remark on the success of orchestrating these apparent
irreconcilable objectives would be welcome. Hopefully the film will
reach British shores before the promised giant tidal wave from the
Canary Islands.

Best wishes,
Graham Hall
