Subject: Waiting to Exhale Shakespeare
Waiting to Exhale, (dir. Forest Whitaker, 1995) makes a comic reference
to the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet. What is quoted, however, is
not the play, but the theme song (the instrumental version) "What Is a
Youth?" from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968). It plays
during the entire scene in which a black woman rejects her suitor and
won't go to a barbeque to meet his mother because he's shown up two
hours late.
