Subject: Free for All Lear
I have to say that I think King Lear has been the DC's Shakespeare
Theatre's weakest production since I've been going, which is about three
years now. As DC residents know, this Free for All production at the
Carter Baron Amphitheatre, I assume, is essentially a re-production of
the regular season's play (which the FFA productions usually are). I saw
the original production and don't care to see it again at CB.
The deaf Cordelia doesn't work. I really thought the actress was cast
because she's very small and easy for Ted Van Griethysen (sp?) as Lear
to carry on stage in the last scene. Edgar and Edmond, esp Edgar, are
very weak as well. Andrew Long as Edmond did not portray Edmond's evil
well at all.
I have to agree with H. Bloom when he says that Lear is extremely
difficult to produce successfully.
