Subject: Is Hamlet a Bastard? (Was: "Time in Hamlet")
Well of course he's a complete jerk, but in the more literal sense?
Re: Claudius as Hamlet's father. Shaky stuff, how many children and all
that.
But anyone interested in Hamlet's legitimacy (or lack of same) should
read Steve Sohmer's work on the subject.
First broached in his first EMLS article:
http://www.shu.ac.uk/emls/02-1/sohmshak.html
With the argument pretty convincingly expanded in his note in the latest
EMLS (6.3):
http://www.shu.ac.uk/emls/06-3/sohmnote.htm
While I disagree with some of the chronological assertions in the first
article, my disagreements don't affect that article's calendar
arithmetic suggesting that Hamlet's a bastard.
Thanks,
Steve
