I too have stood agast but also strangely thrilled in the new old Globe
watching something wicked come my way (The Scottish play)... I
particularly liked the consistency of the production; the blackness of
dress the buckets and the stones that reverberated like gunshots when
they hit the metal bottoms of buckets. Likewise the mad jazz in the
background helped to provide a believable eerie atmosphere - a highly
strung "this wont last long" feeling... however I have often mused, and
perhaps more so at this Globe occasion than any other, whether all plays
performed in this space will inevitably come across as comedy, whether
they are officially tragic or not... I did not have a chance to see the
Globe Hamlet last year, and wonder how many laughs this play pulled out
of the audience given the enjoyable but somewhat unexpected high rate of
giggles and laughs at tragic Macbeth...
