Subject: Ovid in English
I always used the Rolfe Humphries text with students, who enjoyed it.
Those who prefer the Golding are in good company these days. G's stock
is going up, as it can easily be shown that Sh. knew that translation as
it were by heart and drew on it for innumerable passages in the canon.
There is reason to believe it was a reference book in the classroom in
Stratford Grammar School. There is some discussion of such questions in
the collection of studies of Sh and Ovid ed. by A. B. Taylor, Cambridge
U Pr., 2000.
Cheers for good translations,
John
