I want to thank everyone who provided the cat's adage, and all of the
references...I feel so foolish for not looking it up myself, but I keep
an un-annotated complete works at home, and had no referenced MacB's at
hand.  I am doing a production of Tom Stoppard's "On the Razzle" which
uses the line, "...your inheritance will be eaten to the bone by
codicils letting my wont wait upon her will like the poor cat with the
haddock."

This Stoppard stuff is quite dense with literary allusions.  Thanks to
your clarifications, this moment is much funnier :-)
