Subject: Ali G & Othello

I can't remember who it was, but somebody mentioned that Germaine Greer
had come up with the apparently strange notion that Othello was like Ali
G. Having puzzled over this for a while, I conclude that this is a case
of "Chinese whispers". I imagine that Greer's point was that white
actors playing Othello blacked-up were like Ali G, which makes much more
sense. As we speak, a collective of black comedians are gathering
outside the Hackney Empire to protest at Ali G's (Sacha Baren Cohen) new
feature film, which they maintain involves a white actor exploiting
black stereotypes for cheap laughs. Those who recall Ali G's earliest
appearances (interviewing luminaries in short skits during Channel 4's
"Eleven O' Clock Show") will surely concur that the nature and target of
his satire has altered notably in recent months, as his alter-ego has
sold himself out. He is, I would suggest, ripe for dissing.
