Subject: 13.0864 Towards a New Dunciad
Comment: Re: SHK 13.0864 Towards a New Dunciad
Charles Weinstein makes some reasonable criticisms of film studies (and
pop culture studies more generally) in his recent post, but I can't help
but notice that he is over-stating his case badly. Certainly, there are
terrible productions of Shakespeare, and they should be criticized, but
it hardly follows that there are no good cinematic productions.
_Gamlet_ or _Ran_ come immediately to mind. At least one professional
film reviewer (Roger Ebert, maybe?) compared the conversation between
Hugo and his father, the coach, in _O_ to a scene by Ingmar Bergmann.
Yours,
Se
