The Shakespeare Conference: SHK 13.1126 Wednesday, 24 April 2002

A few days ago, I was officially informed that I have been granted
sabbatical leave for next academic year. This sabbatical is something I
sorely need. For the past six years, I have sacrificed spending adequate
time on my scholarly interests and pursuits under the impression that I
was serving my university and department. Oh, boy, and I thought that I
had lost my idealism in the early 1970s. Now, at least, I have a year to
get back to what I love and to think about what I want to do with the
rest of my life. One thing that I already know is that it will have
absolutely NOTHING to do with administration.
Anyway, several weeks ago, I began "transitioning" out of my job as
chair by spending fewer days at my office and more days in my study and
at the Folger Library. And I am having such a wonderful time.
I will continue to bring you SHAKSPER digests, which is the reason that
in anticipation of pursuing more scholarship and of being away from my
current institution I moved the SHAKSPER server to my home.
However, there undoubtedly will be some changes. As some of you may have
noticed, I am much a creature of habit. I generally work on and mail the
SHAKSPER digests between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. EST. For the foreseeable
future this may not always be the case. There may be weeks that I will
miss a day or two of sending out mailings or I might send them later in
the day or in the evening. In addition, I will be in the U.K. for three
weeks in August and do not plan to bring my laptop computer with me.
This note, then, is to inform readers of probable impending changes in
