Subject: Death Mask
Actually I wasn't thinking of the article Paul Franssen mentions, but of
a talk I attended some years ago. The details are rather misty in my
mind but I can remember feeling that I had heard no convincing evidence
for the proposed identification with Shakespeare. I can't comment on
Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel's article because I haven't read it, so
I'm sorry if I gave the impression that it was to her argument that I
was applying the 'wildly speculative' label. Presumably, however, it
will answer Jane Drake Brody's question about where the death mask can
now be seen.
As for Martin Steward's point, yes, I might believe him if he told me
that he could see things with greater sharpness than I appeared to be
able to do - but sometimes bad things happen to people who claim they
can see things which other people can't!
