I too am puzzled by the reference to "breaking-up" but to me the passage
refers to what one sees at the theatre, so perhaps the "First cut" means
the first slash of the knife/sword/weapon in the tragedy?

In which case, "breaking-up" might refer to some sort of slapstick
behavior?  Surely the term doesn't refer to the comedy making the
audience "break up" or laugh hysterically, as more contemporary usage
would have it?
