Subject: Shakespeare or Community Service
Over the last couple of weeks I haven't had a chance to read messages on
SHAKSPER as I've been making an index for a book (2 vols) on European
Renaissance festivals. But I've just found a report of Parliament (30
April 2002) which may be of interest to SHAKSPERians. Here is an excerpt
from the Daily Telegraph.
'The Merchant of Venice was the only piece of Shakespeare penance I ever
did', [replied] Lord Rooker, Home Office Minister, to a suggestion that
young offenders should act Shakespeare rather than do community service.
