Todd Pettigrew writes, "When I directed Othello in 1998, I deliberately
cast an actress [in the part of Desdemona who was an adult, but had a
kind of childlike innocence about her. Many were surprised since other
bombshell types had auditioned, but I thought it worked well".
Imogen Stubbes in a BBC production (1990...? with McKellen and, I think,
Willard White) conveyed a similar quality. Very effective and, it has to
be said, very seductive.
