I can only applaud the Arden3 decision to edit the Q2 text of Hamlet in
one volume and F in another. This is the logical consequence of the
Oxford Complete Works decision to edit separate texts for Q and F King
Lear. I was fully expecting the Oxford Shakespeare to publish separate
volumes of the Q and F texts of King Lear, and lamented here when only
the Q text appeared. Is it too late for Oxford to reverse this
decision? There are just as many differences between Q2 and F Hamlet
(although in a much longer text), so separate texts are justified here
also. Of course, Arden could be accused of opportunism considering that
they published in 1997 editions of King Lear and Othello that were
essentially conflated.

It seems only yesterday that I purchased Harold Jenkins' Arden2 edition
of Hamlet, although I see that my bookmarks have dates of 1982 on them!
At the time it seemed difficult to believe it would ever be superseded,
but in retrospect it should have seemed old-fashioned even then.

I suppose the New Yorker article is advance publicity for the new
volumes - I have, of course, been unable to read the article as the New
Yorker isn't online anywhere! According to Amazon, we can expect an
Arden3 text of Hamlet on 30 September 2003 - but no indication of which
text!
