Subject: Hamlet's Trip to the Theatre 1950
Soon after arriving in London as a student in 1950, I attended a play,
SRO, in the West End. It was "Point of Departure" by Jean Anouilh,
starring Dirk Bogarde and the beautiful Swede Mai Zetterling, at the old
Duke of York's Theatre. A tremendous success, but I think the girls
were there to see the heart throbs and not for Anouilh
The next week this notice appeared in the Arch humorous magazine, Punch
I went to see a French symbolic play
With all the secrets of the soul revealed.
I was too late. The boards were up. I came away
Full-houseled, disappointed, unAnouilhed.
Having relished those awful puns for half a century.
David
