Subject: Lear in Vietnam
From the Toronto Star TV guide May 25-31 re 'Path to War' a film by John
Frankenheimer:
'Dependent on the advice of Clifford and McNamara - both of whom, over
time, reversed their positions on Vietnam - Johnson backed himself into
a conflict from which there was little room for escape.
In focussing on Johnson's Vietnam policies, Frankenheimer refers to the
president as "a modern-day King Lear", adding; "This is a movie about
the downfall of a great man, a larger-than-life person brought down by
his own weaknesses." '
