Terence Hawkes writes:

>He might take
>up the issue of what has happened to Shakespeare's ashes. These used to
>be displayed in special receptacles in the foyer of the Shakespeare
>Memorial Theatre.

I am glad to hear that all relics of the Immortal Bard are being
preserved but was not aware that he smoked.

Cheers,
don

Congratulations on taking up old world burden, of being snootily
dismissive of both the ignorant and their correctors, while veiling
oneself in too many layers of irony to take responsibility for either
position.

Cheers,
Sean.

I hate being right. I actually predicted that I would receive several
messages off-list, and an on-list raspberry from Dr. Hawkes.

I note that Dr. Hawkes continues to condescend, miss the point, and spew
his unwarranted bile in my direction. As usual, he did not engage the
issue but fell back on his tactic of demeaning others without taking the
risk of writing something substantive. In other words, he didn't risk
writing anything whose content could be evaluated and criticized.

This is cowardly. Had Dr. Hawkes behaved differently, I might have
thought I'd been wrong about him all this time. Thank you, Dr. Hawkes,
for confirming that I am right. I hope you enjoy your day job on the
Stratford tour bus.

Dear Terence - (I'll refrain from the rest of the line from A. E.
Housman):

Without passing comment on Mr. Jensen's post, I might suggest to our
overseas cousins -- and Mr. Hawkes in particular -- that it's a damn
good thing some former colonists do occasionally pick the "traditional
new world burden(s)" or, for example, there might not have been a new
Globe as we now know it for another century or two. Conversely, many
cousins have now "picked up the OLD world burdens" and have advised
Americans on their proper role in international affairs. They are, of
course, entitled, as are we all, to their own opinions. MY opinion is
that Shakespeare is not any longer a wholly-owned subsidiary of the
Crown, but then I have, on occasion, make a mistake or two.

Cheers,
John V. Knapp

Some British citizens would be deeply grateful to Mr Jensen. As a
specialist in 16th/17th century history, I am embarrassed by the
fiddle-faddle touristy-style misinformation that these people give out.
I always feel a bit of a pedant if I correct as they are often only
telling us what they have heard! My own favorite was the solemn
declaration by a guide in 'Mary Arden's' house that the holes by the
bedside were called 'cubby holes' (probable) because they put their
young babies (often known as 'cubs') in them, to sleep! Horror! Even
Jesus managed a manger! Cupboard holes never seems to have occurred to
them as a possible explanation.
