The notes by Matt Wolf, the London correspondent for Variety, in the
printed program to the Winter's Tale freeze for us some of the
misconceptions that underlie the production. "Shakespeare done
American?" it asks coyly. "...even in the US, rare is the take on the
Bard that dares transpose him to an American theatregoer's backyard."
His ignorance of American Shakespeare production is at least equaled by
the geographical ignorance of his phrase "America's rural Appalachian
heartland." The phrase 'rural America' calls up Grandma Moses or Iowa
farms rather than the mountainous Appalachia. And he's 1000 miles away
about America's 'heartland,' about the same distance the production is
from Shakespeare's play.
