Subject: Picturing Shakespeare: An Interdisciplinary Symposium
Picturing Shakespeare
An Interdisciplinary Symposium
15-16 November 2002, University of Toronto

The recent discovery of the Sanders Portrait in Canada has intrigued
many with the question: is this a portrait of Shakespeare, painted in
1603, as the family tradition of the owners contends? When the portrait
was put on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario in June 2001, the most
frequent comment from the thousands of visitors who saw it was that the
viewer really wanted this image to be that of William Shakespeare. Why?
The two-day Picturing Shakespeare Symposium, and it's accompanying
public lecture, brings together Canadian and international scholars from
many disciplines: art, theatre and costume historians, palaeographers,
scientists, genealogists, and others to explore issues of public and
scholarly interest generated by the Sanders Portrait. Topics of
discussion include: the nature of historical evidence, the materials
testing and dating of the portrait, the visual representations of
Shakespeare, the history of Elizabethan theatre and portraiture,
palaeography, and genealogy. The Sanders Portrait will also be on view
at the University Art Centre during the symposium.
This symposium is sponsored by the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Records
of Early English Drama, and the University of Toronto Art Centre.
