Dear Terence,
My reference was to Ward's work with linguistic data and not to his
re-iteration of his colleague's (factual but grandiose) statement that:
'The Elegy . . . is 790 trillion times closer to Ford than to
Shakespeare' . Though I do not necessarily agree with the findings or
methodologies of all of Ward Elliott's work (nor that of all stylometric
/ statistical studies) I would nevertheless suggest that a hand-waving
dismissal of computer assisted techniques of literary analysis (such as
yours) is a little naive (not to say limiting).
All the best,
Marcus
