Judging from the context it just means poaching and/or heavy drinking.

Maybe a 'coded' indication that he is a Roman Catholic? Incidentally,
the latest incumbent of the office of Duke of Norfolk, Miles
Fitzalan-Howard dies over the weekend, succeeded by son Edward.
