If Michael wishes to relive the moment, there is a picture of the *Lear*
set with map in the photos after page 48 of Marian J. Pringle's *The
Theatres of Stratford-upon-Avon 1875-1992.* (Stratford-upon-Avon Papers
No. 5, 1993). I should note that the purpose of the photo is to show
the theatre, not the set, but the map can be seen without great detail.

For further commentary on Lear's Map and the RSC Barbican production,
see my "In Search of Nothing: Mapping King Lear," in Shakespere the
Movie, ed. Lynda E. Boose and Richard Burt (New York and London:
Routledge, 1997), pp.
135-47.

Subject: Lear's Map

The 1990 production by Kenneth Branagh's Renaissance Theatre company,
which toured world-wide, and which I saw in Chicago, opened with a map
of England created on the stage with some sort of small red plastic (?)
pieces. Lear then drew the divisions on the map. Before long, of course,
with the initial disruption caused by Cordelia's response and then
Kent's support of her, the map was disrupted and soon the pieces were
scattered chaotically over the entire stage and no map at all remained.
I thought it was very effective.
