Subject: Attributing Masterworks
Anyone interested in attributing poems and plays to Shakespeare will be
interested in today's New York Times article about attributing a drawing
to Michelangelo: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/10/arts/10MICH.html.
Parallels in attributing across the arts are obvious, but no one that I
know of would answer a question about a claim regarding Shakespearean
attribution the way Sir Timothy Clifford answered a reporter's question
about his claim that the drawing in question is by Michelangelo: "It
was just as I recognize a friend in the street or my wife across the
breakfast table."
