I was struck by what Sean Lawrence said, and I don't know if my reaction
is intellectual or personal/social. He equates Isabella's refusal of
sexual coercion with Bertram's refusal of marriage. I would argue that
there is a distinct difference: Bertram has no problem with committing
adultery, as I understand him. So it's metaphorical fruits and veggies,
if you will: sex in the first case, legal/social ties that bind in the
second. I think there are other differences as well, and I very much
liked Annalisa Castaldo's explication of the fairy-tale role reversal in
the case of Bertram.
