Many actors can play both serious and comedic roles well. It is
difficult, yes but that is one of the things that marks a truly talented
performer. One has only to look at the Shenandoah Shakespeare to see
how important versatility is to a small company. Within the same show,
one actor may play serious characters as well as comedic ones.
