For a context to understand all this negativity, and reasons that may
contribute to it, and indeed may make it hard to avoid, I suggest
reading *Rough Magic: Making Theatre the Royal Shakespeare Company* by
Steven Adler (Carbondale and Edwardsville, Southern Illinois University
Press: 2001)

It seems perverse for Hawthorne to tell us, at great length, how awful
this production of Lear was, only to whine when the "scribblers" of the
press tell their readers exactly the same thing.
