I think that the scholarship linking Shakespeare to Montaingne (of the
Cannibals) via Gonzalo's speech at 2.1 (156 particularly {Bevington
pagination}) is faulty. I do not think that Shakespeare relies on
Montainge. I suspect that both Shakespeare and Montaigne are both
referring to Ur X, perhaps, perhaps not of an hermetic nature. More
anon.
