Subject: Duke as Count
Dear Colleagues:
In TN, Duke Orsino is continually referred to as Count/County Orsino by
any number of characters in the play. British peerage/royal hierarchy,
as I learned it, ran King, Prince, Duke, Marquis, Earl (Count),
Viscount, Baron. As a Duke and an Earl/Count are clearly two different
estates, why are the titles seemingly interchangeable? What am I
missing?
