Subject: EMLS and Copyright
I would just like to clarify Gabriel Egan's comment on the use of film
clips and stills in Early Modern Literary Studies. We have always
sought permission for the use of either clips and stills. Where it has
been granted, we have recorded the fact. Occasionally, however, all
attempt to contact the presumed copyright holder has proved fruitless.
Where this has been the case, we have proceeded to publish on the basis
that to do so falls within the terms of fair dealing as quotation for
the purposes of criticism and review, and that we will desist if the
copyright holder raises any objection. There is certainly no intention
to flout or disregard copyright law.
