Dear Stuart Manger,

Why yes, Richard Burt has written a book about pop culture
appropriations of Shakespeare. I've read it and it's pretty interesting.
(I don't know much about the contemporary cultural studies discourse
that it seems to be a part of, but on the whole it is amusing and
instructive.)

As for tedious? I don't know how other people feel about it, but I find
it more tedious than some threads, less than others. (It's less tedious
TO ME than slagging Julie Taymor, or trying to make Shakespeare into an
anti-anti-Semite before the letter. It's more tedious than a good
argument/discussion about how to read particular passage in any play.)
It's a broad group. I think anyone who is willing to take the time to
contribute should be praised, or at least tolerated.

With respect,
Pat Dolan

As someone who takes a lively and intellectual interest in the many
manifestations of Shakespeare in popular culture, I am always deeply
grateful for Richard Burt's contributions to this list. For those who
feel otherwise, there's a wonderful little feature on your email called
the Delete option. I use it frequently to avoid reading posts that I do
not, for various reasons, care to read. It is simple and convenient,
though using it does then preclude me from the fun of sending back an
unnecessarily critical post in response.
