Subject: Re: The Shakespeare Wallah
The Shakespeare Wallah was Geoffrey Kendal, the father of the better
known British actor Felicity Kendal. The film, based on his life
running a Rep company in the Indian subcontinent for many years was one
of the first Merchant Ivory films (Room with a View, Remains of the Day
etc). Felicity toured with her father's company for 18 years, until she
left India to try her luck in London. The company's repertoire ranged
from Shakespeare to Charley's Aunt, and the Shakespeare Wallah was one
of the last great actor managers, whose admirers included Nehru and
Edwina Mountbatten. Felicity Kendal has written a memoir entitled White
Cargo (1998, Michael Joseph, London)
Cheers,
Judi
