H. R. Greenberg's mention of Welles's *Chimes at Midnight* as a version
of *Henry V*--and as a strong influence on Branagh's film of the
play--is more than apt. I've argued that *Chimes* is specifically a
rejoinder to Olivier, one that Branagh found largely persuasive. Those
interested in such issues may find my chapter on the three directors to
be helpful: *Shakespeare in the Cinema: Ocular Proof*, Chapter Six: "The
Revenge of the Actor-Manager" (Albany: State University of New York
Press, 2002), pp. 95-123 (esp. 106-111 for *Chimes* and Branagh's
*Henry V*).

With all good wishes for the new year,

Stephen M. Buhler
