Comment: Re: SHK 14.0100 Re: SAA and Ferry Service

Somehow the whole original message got blipped when I was pruning it to
reply, but let me say that you should check carefully before planning to
get the ferry out of Anacortes (we called it Annie's Corset as kids)
because the last I heard the Washington State Ferries weren't running to
Sidney, which is the entry port for Victoria about 20 miles north at
all. Also, Anacortes is very difficult to get to by anything but
automobile. It is, however, the loveliest of rides, even when it's
raining.

Someone also mentioned the Black Ball Ferry from Port Angeles. This is a
long way from Seattle or Sea-Tac airport, at least 200 miles of roads
and ferries across Puget Sound, Hoods Canal and more. The ferry trip
itself across the Strait of Juan de Fuca is short--on a clear day you
can almost see the Empress Hotel from Port Angeles. If you want this
scenic route around the perimeter of the Olympic Peninsula, another
possibility is to drive north from Seattle to Everett, follow signs to
Mukilteo and ferry to Whidbey Island, where you can get the ferry to
Port Townsend (great town for antique hunters)and drive west from there
to Port Angeles or north to Anacortes (observing the caution I mentioned
above). Either way, a detour off I-5 in Skagit County that time of year
to see the tulip fields is well worth it.

[Sigh] I'm making myself homesick. Just wish I could be going to the
SAA.
