To Alexandra Davida Hoffer:

As I think I mentioned recently, Don Wayne ("Power, Politics, and the
Shakespearean Text," in *Shakespeare Reproduced*, ed. Howard/O'Connor),
for one, refers to malevolent 20s/30s representations of Shylock -- in
part in reaction to idealized Victorian representations, in part because
of changing London and NYC demographics, and in part in tune with the
increasingly blatant anti-Semitism of the times. David Belasco's
1922-23 NYC production, featuring David Warfield as Shylock, is
mentioned, as is Toby Lelyveld's text, *Shylock on the Stage*.
