'Shakespeare and Poetry: or, 'Has anything Happened in the Last 15
Years?'

The arguably heretical question that inspires this seminar is this: Has
criticism of Shakespeare changed in any truly substantive way in the
last 15 years especially in relation to the residually formalist
category, "poetry"? For although he is often treated as a prose writer,
the majority of Shakespeare's writing is in verse. We might rush to
Feminism and new historicism as signs of our progress, but these had
already well been 'invented' 15 years ago; intimations of racial
difference in 'a woman colored ill' had already been found, and Joel
Fineman's Perjured Eye was already out.
