Subject: Coughing up the dosh.
A married couple and an academic have just been found guilty in the UK
of attempting to defraud a TV company of one million pounds through the
use of an elaborate cue system on a quiz show. In today's reporting of
the trial and its background there isn't a tabloid or broadsheet that
fails to label the wife "Lady Macbeth". But we must forgive the press
their indolent cliche as they go on to helpfully point out that the
conspiratorial lady has three children.
"Loves Labour's Won/Lost" came to mind but the idle hacks of Fleet
Street clearly do not regard F. Meres as a reliable card-carrying NUJ
reporter.
Best wishes,
Graham Hall
