The NY Shakespeare Festival's "As You Like It" is an absolute delight.
As soon as it began I realized it was the "Directors Company" production
I saw in a 42nd Street storefront a couple years ago, directed by Erica
Schmidt. I loved it then and was pleased that my students were getting
a chance to see it. They were unanimous in their raves when we gathered
to discuss it. I had feared that students unfamiliar with the play
would have trouble following it, but none of them did. They were all
"As You Like It" is such an old warhorse, its clever turns and charming
characters so sure fire, too many directors are satisfied to coast on
its obvious charms. What is needed is a real obstacle to test the
troupe's creativity and this bunch found it - doing all of the
characters with only six players.
It works. Go see it.
